Communications and Outreach Advisor


Major Responsibilities


Working with the Councillor and reporting directly to her Executive Assistant, the successful candidate will be responsible for a range of communications and outreach work in a fast paced political environment.


Job Duties

  •  Regularly update, monitor and manage social media accounts

  • Update and maintain the Councillor’s website, including content development

  • Prepare communication material including electronic newsletters, print newsletters, meeting notices, advertisements and media releases

  •  Draft speaking notes and briefing materials for the Councillor

  •  Develop and implement office Social Media strategy to increase online presence and engagement

  •  Liaise and maintain positive working relationships with City staff, community groups and other stakeholders

  •  Represent the Councillor at meetings and events

  •  Maintain confidentiality of personal and sensitive information

  •  Undertake special assignments and projects as requested

Qualifications and Skills

  •  Post-secondary education in Communications or Public Relations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  •  2-3 years of experience in communications

  •  Demonstrated ability to develop strong working relationships with individuals and organizations

  •  Exceptional communication and problem-solving skills

  •  Ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure, set priorities, and meet deadlines

  •  Strategic and creative thinker

  •  Solutions-focused with the ability to take initiative, be resourceful, proactive and manage multiple projects

  •  Ability to work independently and collaboratively

  •  Intermediate skills in graphic design and significant experience using social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

  •  Experience in web design and management software (proficiency using Wix is an asset)

  •  Experience in media relations

  •  Ability to work flexible hours which may include some evenings and weekends

  •  Experience in a political office and knowledge of York South-Weston issues and communities, as well as broader municipal issues are an asset

  •  Fluency in a second language is an asset
